Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role. While the series will focus on a new Slayer, Gellar's involvement is expected as a recurring character.
Adding star power behind the camera, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (known for Nomadland and Eternals) is in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon will not be participating.
Whedon's absence follows previous accusations of creating a toxic work environment on Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center on a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's return as Buffy.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. Aided by friends Willow, Xander, and Watcher Rupert Giles, she battled demons and vampires across seven seasons (1997-2003). The franchise continued with the Angel spin-off and subsequent comic books.
