Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Reports
Despite recent reports, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who previously stated his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU remains firm. "I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then," Mackie explained. Evans himself reiterated his retirement to Esquire, stating, "Happily retired."
While Evans has appeared in the MCU in a comedic cameo as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, his return as Captain America is not currently happening. This recurring rumor has surfaced since Avengers: Endgame, prompting Evans to cease addressing it.
The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, from the franchise due to assault and harassment charges. Majors' planned role as the MCU's next Thanos has been significantly altered, leading to speculation about the return of original Avengers. This speculation was fueled by the announcement of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, the new main antagonist.
While other original Avengers' returns remain unconfirmed, Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday but his central role in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which will reportedly feature Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter and continue the multiverse storyline.
