FromSoftware has recently unveiled more details about its upcoming exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2, titled The Duskbloods. This exciting collaboration with Nintendo has not only influenced the game's style but also led to a unique redesign of the hub area's keeper, introducing a character that breaks from FromSoftware's traditional aesthetic norms.
During the Switch 2 Direct, the trailer for The Duskbloods concluded with an intriguing shot of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, directly engaging the audience with its gaze. This character, as revealed by director Hidetaka Miyazaki in an interview with Nintendo, will serve as the hub companion, akin to the iconic fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance," Miyazaki explained.
In a nod to the partnership with Nintendo, Miyazaki shared, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership." When pressed for further clarification on what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," he elaborated with a touch of humor, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)."
FromSoftware's shrine keepers have long been pivotal in guiding players through their challenging worlds, with familiar faces like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll providing both narrative depth and functional assistance. The winged rat in The Duskbloods promises to continue this tradition, albeit with a fresh twist suitable for the game's PvPvE dynamics. Miyazaki hinted at the inclusion of "a lot of new and interesting ideas," suggesting that players should brace for surprises when The Duskbloods launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
