ESA on Trump Tariffs: 'More Than Just Switch 2'

Author : Thomas May 12,2025

The past 48 hours have been a whirlwind for economics enthusiasts and Nintendo fans alike. On Wednesday, the gaming world was hit with the news that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 would be priced at a steep $450 in the U.S. This pricing, analysts say, reflects a combination of factors including anticipated tariffs, inflation, competition, and the rising costs of components.

The situation escalated further when, last night, the Trump Administration announced wide-reaching 10% tariffs on nearly all countries, with significantly higher tariffs targeted at nations such as China, the EU, Japan, Vietnam, Canada, Mexico, and many others. In a swift response, China announced this morning a 34% reciprocal tariff on all U.S. goods. Amidst this economic turmoil, Nintendo made a surprising move just hours ago, postponing Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S. to assess the potential impact of these tariffs on their console strategy.

This unprecedented situation has left analysts, experts, and the public grappling to understand its full ramifications. Just 30 minutes before Nintendo's announcement, I spoke with Aubrey Quinn, a spokesperson for the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), to delve into the broader implications of these tariffs on the gaming industry.

The ESA, like many others, is still navigating the potential outcomes of these developments. According to Quinn, the industry was bracing for some form of tariffs due to President Trump's previous actions and campaign rhetoric. She also anticipated retaliatory measures from countries like China, and the possibility of further U.S. tariffs. However, the exact impact remains uncertain.

Despite the uncertainty, Quinn is clear on one point: these tariffs will have a negative impact on the video game industry. "We really are, at this point, just watching and trying not to have knee-jerk reactions, because we don't think that what President Trump announced this week is the end of the story, but what was announced this week and the tariffs as outlined, we do expect these tariffs will have a real and detrimental impact on the industry and the hundreds of millions of Americans who love to play games," she stated. The ESA aims to collaborate with the administration and elected officials to find solutions that protect both U.S. industries and consumers.

Quinn elaborated on the detrimental effects, noting that tariffs would likely increase the cost of gaming systems and affect consumer spending. This, in turn, could reduce company profits, impacting job security, research and development, and the future of console generations. "The entire consumer ecosystem is connected," she emphasized.

In response, the ESA has already taken steps, joining a coalition of trade associations to voice their concerns to U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer before the tariffs were announced. They are also seeking meetings with various legislators and administration members to discuss these issues. When asked if these efforts are making an impact, Quinn confirmed that conversations are indeed happening at multiple levels within the government and in partnership with other associations, highlighting that this issue transcends the gaming industry and will affect all consumer products.

For concerned consumers, Quinn suggested reaching out to elected representatives through letters, calls, emails, or social media to express their concerns. "I think the more members of government, elected officials, and their staff who hear that their constituents are concerned, the more likely we are to be heard and to potentially make an impact," she advised.

Nintendo's decision to pause pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 came just minutes after our conversation ended. While the ESA does not comment on decisions made by individual companies, Quinn did acknowledge the unfortunate timing of the Switch 2 announcement coinciding with the tariff news. She emphasized that the impact of these tariffs extends beyond just the Switch, affecting a wide range of gaming devices from other consoles to VR headsets and smartphones. "This is going to have an impact on the entire industry," she concluded, underscoring the broad, company-agnostic effects of the new tariffs.
