Harry Potter actor Jason Isaacs has spoken out against what he calls "rude" online criticism over the casting of Black actor Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter television series.
Essiedu, known for roles in Black Mirror and HBO's I May Destroy You, was confirmed for the pivotal role of Snape in April, succeeding the late Alan Rickman, who portrayed the character in the original film series.

Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the films, has now addressed the reaction, supporting Essiedu and condemning the online negativity as racism.
"Paapa Essiedu is one of the finest actors I have ever seen," Isaacs stated during a panel at FanExpo Denver, as reported by Collider. "I've seen some disrespectful comments about him online. That's simply racism.
"The entire cast for the new Harry Potter series is exceptional. Those critics will likely regret their words—their digital words, that is—once they see his performance."
Snape is a central and enigmatic figure in the Harry Potter saga, with his true motives remaining shrouded for much of the narrative. His complex backstory, including his ties to Harry's parents and his allegiance to Voldemort, is only fully revealed in the later books and films.
Criticism of Essiedu's casting includes arguments that he does not match the physical description of Snape from the books—a similar complaint was made about the casting of a Black actress as Hermione in the successful stage play *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child*—and that changing Snape's race alters key dynamics of his story, such as his childhood bullying and his unrequited love for Harry's mother.
While some view the casting as a significant departure, others believe it will bring new depth and clarity to Snape's character, ultimately strengthening the overall narrative.
"The series is being developed by the same creative team behind the films, and they are taking the time to adapt each book into a full season," Isaacs added. "It's going to be excellent."
The first major casting announcement was veteran actor John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore. Further updates revealed Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley.
The Harry Potter television series is slated to begin production this year, with a planned premiere on HBO in late 2026 or early 2027.
