Disney movie veteran Jon Favreau is teaming up with Disney once again, this time for an exciting Disney+ series that will bring back the classic animated icon, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. According to a Deadline report, Favreau will leverage his expertise in both live-action and animation to create this new TV show, where he will serve as both writer and producer. While plot details and casting information remain under wraps, the anticipation is high for this innovative blend of storytelling techniques.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit holds a special place in Disney's rich history of animated characters. Conceived by Walt Disney himself, Oswald initially starred in 26 silent cartoons from 1927 to 1928. However, a rights dispute led to Universal taking control, prompting a challenging period for Disney that ultimately gave rise to the creation of Mickey Mouse. As detailed in our in-depth look at Disney’s 100-year history, Disney regained the rights to Oswald in 2006, and in 2022, they released their first new original short starring the character in 95 years. Now, with Favreau at the helm, Disney aims to elevate Oswald beyond a mere symbol of its storied past.

Although a release date for Favreau’s project has not yet been announced, fans can look forward to seeing this unique live-action and animation hybrid on Disney+ in the future. Meanwhile, Favreau continues to be a pivotal figure in Disney's newer ventures, notably contributing to the Star Wars universe with projects like The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka. He has also left a significant mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the past 15 years, including directing the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Fans can anticipate his directorial return with The Mandalorian and Grogu, set to hit theaters in 2026.

In addition to the upcoming Disney+ series, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit made a recent appearance in the 2023 horror film Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, starring Ghostbusters actor Ernie Hudson. This film came just one year after Oswald entered the public domain, showcasing the character's enduring appeal and versatility across different genres.
