Simu Liu, the star of Marvel's Shang-Chi, is spearheading efforts to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports that Liu responded to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he's actively working with rights holders to bring the game to the big screen.
The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, vanished after a year. Recently, Yen confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, only to see the project ultimately fail to materialize due to the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
Liu's intervention reignites hope for the Hong Kong-based action franchise. However, the success of his endeavor in securing the rights or otherwise reviving the project remains uncertain.
The original Sleeping Dogs video game, released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows Detective Wei Shen as he undertakes an undercover operation within a formidable Hong Kong Triad. Critically acclaimed, receiving an 8/10 rating from IGN, the game, despite its success, never spawned any sequels. Liu's involvement could change that.
