In an engaging interview at Gamescom, Mortal Kombat co-founder Ed Boon shed light on how the team at NetherRealm Studios plans to differentiate the gameplay of Omni-Man and Homelander in Mortal Kombat 1. Addressing fan concerns about potential similarities between these two powerhouse characters, Boon assured that the developers are committed to creating distinct experiences for each.
Ed Boon Confirms Homelander and Omni-Man Will Play Differently
During the IGN interview, Boon emphasized the creative freedom they have with these characters but made it clear that the intention is to avoid overlapping Superman-esque abilities. He stated, "Obviously, we could do anything with the characters, but I don’t think we’re going to have both Homelander and Omni-Man have heat vision or something like that." This approach ensures that players will feel like they're controlling two very different heroes.
Boon further explained that the team has drawn inspiration from the iconic moments of these characters in their respective shows, transforming these into unique Fatalities. He highlighted that while the main attacks will significantly differentiate the characters, they are aware of and actively countering the assumption that Omni-Man and Homelander would be too similar. "They’re definitely going to play differently. The main attacks are going to really differentiate them, but we’re definitely aware of the assumption that some people were making on, 'Oh, they’re just going to be the same characters.'"
