Gameplay: Weaving Magic and Combat
South of Midnight introduces the core mechanic of Weaving, manipulating the threads of fate. This magical art is integral to both combat and exploration.
Game director Jasmin Roy highlighted the combat system at the Xbox Developer Direct 2025. Players utilize spells like Push, Pull, and Weave for tactical advantages, emphasizing precise timing to execute combos and stuns.
Hazel wields a spindle, weaving hooks, and a distaff, tools inspired by traditional textile crafting. These provide diverse combat options, allowing players to overcome Haints and cleanse their corruption.
Weaving extends beyond combat; Hazel uses her powers to conjure past forms of objects for exploration and puzzle-solving, as seen in the Direct with a spectral carriage and glider.
Art director Whitney Clayton revealed that Prospero's diverse regions are each governed by a mythical creature with its own unique Southern Gothic history. Two-Toed Tom, a massive albino alligator, was showcased.
Hazel collects Echoes, fragments of haunted memories, to heal the corrupted creatures. However, epic confrontations are unavoidable before restoration can begin.
Hazel's quest to reunite with her mother takes her across a captivating landscape, challenging her Weaving skills and demanding strategic combat. Prepare for an unforgettable adventure.
