Square Enix has officially released a Final Fantasy IX prequel picture book commemorating the series' 25th anniversary. This new story delves into Vivi's background while introducing exclusive anniversary merchandise and event details.

Originally launched on July 7, 2000, Final Fantasy IX continues its 25th anniversary celebration with the newly published picture book "Vivi and Grandpa On the Day of Departure." Developed by Event Designer Kazuhiko Aoki and Character Designer Toshiyuki Itahana, this 44-page RPG prequel reveals the origins of Black Mage Vivi and his adoptive grandfather Quan, set before Vivi's voyage to the Kingdom of Alexandria.
This publication represents the second Final Fantasy picture book collaboration between Aoki and Itahana, following their previous work "Chocobo and the Airship," which debuted in Japan in 2021 and globally in 2023. "Vivi and Grandpa On the Day of Departure" is currently available in both digital and physical formats through Amazon Japan and Rakuten, priced at 1,320 yen (approximately $9 USD at current exchange rates).
Complementing the picture book release, Square Enix has introduced an extensive lineup of Final Fantasy IX merchandise. While certain items remain exclusive to the Japanese market, international fans can purchase plush toys, Vivi's Hat apparel, and a vinyl album containing both original and newly recorded compositions through Square Enix's online store. These products are also featured at the Square Enix pop-up store in Osaka, with a Tokyo location scheduled to open on July 25, 2025.
Limited-Edition Final Fantasy IX Eyewear Collaboration with Zoff
In celebration of the RPG's 25th anniversary, Square Enix has partnered with Japanese eyewear brand Zoff to create limited-edition Final Fantasy IX glasses. The collection presents three distinctive frame designs, each accompanied by exclusive cleaning wipes and themed cases. Currently, these fittings are exclusively available at select Zoff locations throughout Japan:
