Final Fantasy 14 Servers Experience Major Issues

Final Fantasy XIV North American Servers Suffer Major Outage: Power Issue, Not DDoS

Final Fantasy XIV experienced a significant server outage impacting all four North American data centers on January 5th, around 8:00 PM Eastern. Initial reports and player accounts suggest the cause was a localized power outage in Sacramento, possibly due to a blown transformer, rather than a DDoS attack. Service was restored within an hour.

This event follows a year of persistent DDoS attacks targeting Final Fantasy XIV servers throughout 2024. These attacks, which flood servers with false information, caused high latency and disconnections. While Square Enix has employed mitigation strategies, completely preventing DDoS attacks remains challenging. Players have sometimes used VPNs as a workaround to improve connectivity.

The January 5th outage, however, appears to be distinct. Reddit discussions on r/ffxiv point to eyewitness accounts of a loud explosion in Sacramento, consistent with a blown transformer, coinciding with the server downtime. This lends credence to the power outage theory. Square Enix acknowledged the issue via the Lodestone and confirmed an ongoing investigation.

Impact and Recovery:

The outage was geographically limited to North America; European, Japanese, and Oceanic servers remained operational. Recovery was gradual, with Aether, Crystal, and Primal data centers returning online first. The Dynamis data center, the newest addition, remained offline at the time of this writing.

Looking Ahead:

This incident adds to the challenges faced by Final Fantasy XIV, especially considering ambitious plans for 2025, including the launch of a mobile version. The long-term effects of these recurring server issues remain to be seen.
