Fans are smashing Civilization 7 on Steam: The game is being heavily criticized

Civilization VII's rocky launch has left many Firaxis fans disappointed. Steam reviews, currently numbering over 1,000 and averaging a dismal 37%, paint a picture of a game plagued by significant issues.

The primary complaints center around a poorly-executed interface, outdated graphics, and a pervasive feeling of incompleteness. User Cool CGI Dog, after just 90 minutes of gameplay, described the game as "blatantly incomplete," citing "resource icons from 1998," a "terrible interface," and an overall lack of polish. The user expressed disbelief at the perceived lack of care from Firaxis, contrasting Civ VII sharply with the superior quality of Civ VI, and deemed the $70 price tag unjustified. A complete visual overhaul of the interface was demanded.

Another player, WillNever, echoed these sentiments after a 2.5-hour session, characterizing the interface as an "alpha-phase" design that has received little to no refinement. While acknowledging intriguing new mechanics, the user concluded that the poor interface renders the experience frustrating, requiring extensive patching to reach an acceptable level of playability.

The overwhelming consensus among reviewers points to a premature release, demanding substantial improvements. The $70 price point is particularly contentious, widely considered excessive given the current state of the game.

The Civilization franchise's legacy of quality is at stake. Fans are hopeful that Firaxis will address the critical feedback through substantial updates, restoring Civ VII to the high standards expected of the series. In its current form, however, the game falls far short of expectations.
