PlayStation Reveals How Many Gamers Turn Off Their PS5 Compared to Putting It in Rest Mode

Author : Savannah Jan 27,2025

Half of PlayStation 5 users bypass the console's rest mode, opting for a complete system shutdown instead, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This surprising statistic, revealed by Cory Gasaway, VP of Game, Product, and Player Experiences, during an interview with Stephen Totilo, prompted the development of the PS5's Welcome Hub.

The Welcome Hub, conceived during a PlayStation hackathon, aims to provide a unified user experience despite varying preferences. Gasaway noted a 50/50 split in US users between viewing the PS5 Explore page and the last-played game page upon startup, highlighting the need for a customizable and universally appealing home screen. This reflects Sony's commitment to a cohesive experience, even amidst diverse user behaviors.

While the reasons for avoiding rest mode remain varied and anecdotal, some users report internet connectivity issues while others simply prefer a full shutdown. The feature, initially touted by Jim Ryan for its energy-saving benefits, continues to be a point of divergence among PS5 owners. This data, however, offers valuable insight into the design considerations behind the PS5's user interface. The Welcome Hub serves as a direct response to this user behavior, demonstrating Sony's commitment to adapting to player preferences.
