Resident Evil Survival Unit Arrives Before the End of 2025
A Pandemic Horror Strategy Experience
Resident Evil Survival Unit marks the first mobile strategy game for the Resident Evil series, developed in partnership with Aniplex and JOYCITY under the leadership of former Square Enix Producer and current Executive Producer, Shinji Hashimoto. During the official announcement livestream on July 10, Hashimoto discussed his vision for the project and its core gameplay mechanics.
Hashimoto expressed his appreciation for the "pandemic horror" concept and its survival aspects, noting how well they translate into the strategy genre. He explained, "That's precisely why we selected the strategy genre—it enables players worldwide to experience the Resident Evil universe together, offering a fresh perspective compared to earlier titles."

While RE Survival Unit honors the rich legacy of the Resident Evil series, it introduces a parallel storyline separate from the main games. RE Producer Masachika Kawata reflected on the franchise's 30-year history of gripping horror and thrilling action, expressing great enthusiasm for this first dedicated strategy entry.
He also mentioned the team's careful approach, acknowledging that this marks the series' debut in the strategy genre. Additionally, Kawata noted that seeing various characters and creatures from across the franchise come together is a dream realized for longtime fans.
A Parallel World Tied to Resident Evil 2 and 3

RE Survival Unit's narrative unfolds in a parallel world connected to the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3. JOYCITY Producer Kyle Dongkyun confirmed that although the setting diverges, the core elements and characters from the original series have been faithfully integrated.
The main character awakens in a hospital, held captive by the Umbrella Corporation for experimentation. Players must escape the abandoned asylum, uncover its dark secrets, and confront powerful enemies that require thoughtful strategy to overcome. The game also includes the series' signature easter eggs, items, and puzzle-solving elements.
The Mansion: Your Central Hub

Serving as the game's primary hub, the Mansion acts as your base of operations, housing all in-game activities and essential gameplay components. It welcomes various characters from the Resident Evil universe, offering unique interactions and dialogue for fans to discover.
Here, players can prepare for missions, develop strategies, and shop for items from the iconic Weapons Merchant. "Designed to reflect your choices, the game empowers you to forge your own unique tactical path," Dongkyun stated.
As noted, characters from throughout the Resident Evil series will appear, including fan favorites like Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, and Jill Valentine. Players can assemble their ultimate RE squad to battle the terrifying creatures inhabiting this world. Each character brings unique skills and traits, encouraging experimentation with diverse team compositions.
Original Creature Design by Yoshitaka Amano

The game also showcases an original creation by world-renowned Japanese artist Yoshitaka Amano, celebrated for his work on Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D, and numerous classic anime productions. Amano contributes his distinctive, ethereal style, which complements the horror atmosphere of the Resident Evil series.
For RE Survival Unit, Amano designed "Mortem," a crucial creature central to the storyline. He remarked, "When designing a character, certain decisions must define its form. However, in this instance, I believed leaving some aspects ambiguous would enhance the fear factor. I aimed to evoke a sense of unease—a shadowy presence that suggests the creature's true nature without fully disclosing it."
All creature designs result from close collaboration among the three companies. Hashimoto stressed that all studios have united to create a game that maintains the original spirit of Resident Evil while presenting it through a new lens on mobile platforms.
