More than 450 developers working on Blizzard's Diablo franchise have voted to unionize with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), forming the largest-ever video game worker union under Microsoft's ownership.
The newly certified union represents game developers, artists, designers, engineers, and support staff across the Diablo series. Microsoft has officially recognized the union under its labor neutrality agreement.
"With each wave of mass layoffs, I've seen my colleagues' anxiety grow deeper—no amount of dedication seems sufficient to guarantee job security," said Kelly Yeo, a Diablo game producer and organizing committee member. "Our union marks a critical first step in joining a growing industry movement that refuses to accept constant instability. Together with our Diablo teammates, we're prepared to advocate for meaningful protections."
The decision follows Microsoft's January 2024 layoffs of approximately 9,100 employees, which impacted multiple teams within its gaming divisions including Activision Blizzard.
The Diablo developers join expanding unionization efforts across Microsoft's gaming studios. Over 3,500 Microsoft employees have now organized with CWA, including the entire World of Warcraft team (unionized in 2023) and Overwatch developers (organized May 2024). Other unionized Xbox groups include:
- Raven Software workers (secured first contract in June 2024)
- Zenimax QA testers (contracted May 2024)
- Bethesda union members
- Story and franchise development teams
These organizing efforts have gained momentum under Microsoft's labor neutrality agreement, which provides clearer pathways for worker representation compared to other major tech companies.
