Onimusha: Way of the Sword breaks from contemporary trends, neither adopting Soulslike mechanics nor open-world design. Discover how Capcom honors the franchise's legacy while meticulously recreating samurai authenticity through legendary actor portrayals.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Stays True to the Series
Not an Open-World Soulslike

Marking the series' first mainline entry in two decades, Onimusha: Way of the Sword amplifies the franchise's core strengths rather than chasing modern gaming trends. Director Satoru Nihei clarified the game's direction in a June 19 interview with Automaton.
Nihei decisively stated, "Onimusha: Way of The Sword isn't structured as an open-world experience, nor does it embrace punishing Soulslike mechanics."

"Our development priority centers on delivering exhilarating blade combat," Nihei explained, emphasizing accessibility for both action veterans and newcomers. During a March Famitsu interview, Nihei and Producer Akihito Kadowaki confirmed the game maintains traditional linear progression while offering 20+ hours of content, potentially receiving Japan's strict CERO Z (18+) rating.
Capcom Spent 2 Years To Get Toshiro Mifune's Likeness

Since production began in 2020, Capcom has prioritized authentic samurai representation, particularly through protagonist Musashi Miyamoto's character design. The studio secured rights to model the warrior after iconic Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune following a two-year negotiation process.
"When envisioning our blood-soaked, mud-caked samurai protagonist, Mifune immediately came to mind," Nihei revealed in a June 16 Game Watch interview.

Mifune's legendary portrayal of Miyamoto Musashi in 1950s cinema and Capcom's previous utilization of his likeness in Netflix's Onimusha anime demonstrate the company's commitment to preserving this cultural iconography. The studio vows to deliver an immersive samurai experience accessible to all skill levels.
Scheduled for 2026 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms, Onimusha: Way of the Sword promises to honor franchise traditions while advancing visceral combat mechanics. For ongoing updates about this highly anticipated revival, continue following our coverage.
