Pocketpair Patches Palworld Amid Nintendo and Pokémon Lawsuit

Author : Emily May 14,2025

Palworld developer Pocketpair has revealed that recent updates to the game were necessitated by an ongoing patent lawsuit filed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Launched in early 2024 on Steam for $30 and simultaneously on Xbox and PC via Game Pass, Palworld shattered sales and concurrent player records. The overwhelming success led Pocketpair to sign a deal with Sony, forming Palworld Entertainment to expand the franchise, which later saw the game's release on PS5.

The game's launch drew comparisons to Pokémon, with some accusing Pocketpair of copying Pokémon designs. Instead of pursuing a copyright infringement lawsuit, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company opted for a patent lawsuit, seeking 5 million yen (about $32,846) each, plus additional damages and an injunction to block Palworld's release.

In November, Pocketpair confirmed they were being sued over three Japan-based patents related to capturing Pokémon in a virtual field. Palworld features a similar mechanic where players throw a Pal Sphere to capture monsters, akin to the system in the 2022 Nintendo Switch game Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Six months later, Pocketpair admitted that changes introduced in Patch v0.3.11, released in November 2024, were due to this legal action. This update removed the ability to summon Pals by throwing Pal Spheres, replacing it with a static summon beside the player, along with other mechanic adjustments. Pocketpair stated that without these changes, the gameplay experience would have deteriorated even further.

Additionally, the latest Patch v0.5.5 modifies Palworld further, changing the gliding mechanic from using Pals to using a glider, which players must carry in their inventory. Although Pals can still provide passive gliding buffs, this shift was described by Pocketpair as a necessary compromise to avoid potential injunctions that could halt Palworld's development and sales.

Despite these adjustments, Pocketpair remains committed to contesting the lawsuit, focusing on proving the patents' invalidity. They expressed their disappointment in having to make these changes but emphasized their necessity to maintain the game's development trajectory.

Pocketpair's full statement reflects gratitude towards their fans and apologizes for the limited transparency during the legal proceedings. They reaffirm their commitment to delivering new content and continuing Palworld's development.

At the Game Developers Conference in March, John "Bucky" Buckley, communications director and publishing manager for Pocketpair, discussed the studio's challenges, including accusations of using generative AI and copying Pokémon models, which have been debunked. Buckley also mentioned the unexpected nature of the patent lawsuit from Nintendo, underscoring its impact on the studio.
