Fans of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have a reason to celebrate as the developer, Saber Interactive, has opened up its internal editor to modders, igniting hopes that the game could enjoy a long-lasting life fueled by user-generated content, much like Skyrim. Game director Dmitry Grigorenko made the announcement on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord, marking it as a significant step in supporting the modding community.
The release of the official Integration Studio for public use is a game-changer. This editor, which the developers use for all gameplay development, allows modders to dive deep into the game's mechanics. From crafting new level scenarios and game modes to tweaking AI behavior, abilities, melee combo logic, user interface, and HUD elements, the possibilities are vast. Grigorenko emphasized the studio's commitment to the modding scene, expressing excitement about the community's potential to create everything from cinematic campaigns to entirely new game modes.
To kick things off, Grigorenko shared humorous concept art for a "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, teasing the new capabilities. Marneus Calgar, the leader of the Ultramarines, stars in this lighthearted concept that modders can now technically bring to life.
To understand the community's plans, I spoke with Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop, the creator of Space Marine 2's Astartes Overhaul. Fresh from enabling 12-player co-op, Tom now has access to all scripting tools, opening up endless possibilities. He envisions a roguelite mode where players start with just a combat knife and progressively face tougher enemies, with chances to gain weapons and health. Tom also suggested that while a new Chaos campaign is feasible, creating cutscenes remains challenging due to limited access to animation tools. However, he's currently working on adding new factions like the Tau and Necrons to the game.
The reaction from Space Marine 2 fans has been overwhelmingly positive. The game, already a top-selling Warhammer title, offers only three factions: Space Marines, Chaos, and the Tyrannids. While players hoped for official DLC to expand the roster, the modding community can now fill this gap. Redditor Mortwight highlighted the potential for longevity, likening it to Skyrim's enduring appeal through mods.
This development comes amidst news that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 is in the works. While some fans worry about the future of Space Marine 2 DLC, both Saber and publisher Focus Entertainment have reassured fans that support for the game will continue. With the modding community now empowered with the editor, Space Marine 2 is poised for an extended lifespan.
