Bungie has announced it's currently re-recording dialogue in Destiny 2 to bring back the original voices of key characters including Vanguard leader Ikora Rey.
Following the release of The Edge of Fate expansion - the first content drop in the Year of Prophecy - players observed that Ikora Rey's voice, previously performed by Gina Torres, now resembled Savathun from The Witch Queen. This was due to Debra Wilson (Savathun's voice actor) temporarily taking over the role.
Voice Cast Changes and Resolution
Bungie had previously informed players in May about upcoming changes to the English voice cast for Orin, Chioma, and Ikora. However, in a July 15 update, the studio confirmed it's "actively re-recording lines" after the original cast became unavailable during The Edge of Fate's production. While no specific timeline was provided, Bungie stated these corrections will arrive in a "future update."
Until the fixes are implemented, players may encounter temporary voice performances or muted characters in certain situations. Similar to Destiny 2: Heresy, story moments will display subtitles when audio isn't available.
Behind the Scenes: SAG-AFTRA Strike Impact
Though not directly addressed, Bungie mentioned resolved "conflicts" coinciding with SAG-AFTRA ending its strike over AI protections. The labor dispute began in July 2024 after negotiations broke down between the actors' union and major gaming companies including Activision, EA, and WB Games regarding AI usage in voice performances, with 98% of members voting to strike.
Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy Roadmap
Bungie's recent showcase revealed ambitious plans for Destiny 2, including two paid expansions and substantial seasonal updates under the Year of Prophecy banner - the first to feature four major content releases annually, with half being free updates.
Marathon Reboot Developments
Beyond Destiny, Bungie continues development on its Marathon reboot announced in May 2023. The project faced challenges during alpha testing and controversy regarding alleged plagiarized content. Following player feedback, Bungie has indefinitely delayed Marathon's launch while addressing these concerns.
