Composer Jack Wall has revealed why he didn't return to create the music for Mass Effect 3, despite his acclaimed work on the soundtracks for the first two games in the series.
Wall collaborated with developer BioWare to produce the synth-infused, 80s-inspired sci-fi scores for Mass Effect (2007) and its sequel, Mass Effect 2 (2010). Mass Effect 2 is widely regarded as one of the greatest action RPGs ever created, and Wall's powerful soundtrack—featuring the iconic 'Suicide Mission' track—is considered a standout achievement by the fan community.
His absence from the 2012 release, Mass Effect 3, surprised many fans. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Wall explained that the decision stemmed from a disagreement with the series' director at the time, Casey Hudson.
"Casey wasn't entirely happy with me by the end," Wall stated. "But I remain incredibly proud of that score. It received a BAFTA nomination and was very well received... even if it didn't fully align with Casey's vision."

The Guardian described a "creative tension" between Wall and Hudson, though Wall was somewhat evasive. "Disagreements like that happen; it's just part of the industry," he added. "It was one of the few times in my career that something like that occurred. It was difficult, but you move on."
Wall did elaborate on the challenges he and BioWare faced while developing Mass Effect 2, particularly the complex process of integrating the 'Suicide Mission' music into the final game. This insight may shed some light on his strained relationship with Hudson toward the project's conclusion.
"It was the most mentally challenging task I've ever undertaken," Wall recalled. "And there was no one available to guide me through it because the entire team was overwhelmed trying to finish the game. I submitted my work, and they had to do significant technical adjustments on their end to make it function. But they succeeded... and the result remains one of the most compelling final sequences I've ever experienced in a game. It was worth all the struggle."
Following Mass Effect 2, Wall contributed music to several Call of Duty titles, most recently composing the score for Black Ops 6. Meanwhile, BioWare is currently developing the next Mass Effect title after the forthcoming release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The studio has not yet announced who will compose the music.
