Stray Kite Studios Unveils "Wartorn," a Real-Time Strategy Roguelite

Stray Kite Studios, a Dallas-based developer boasting veterans from renowned studios like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires, has announced its first original title: Wartorn. This real-time strategy roguelite, slated for Steam and Epic Games Store early access release in Spring 2025, promises a unique blend of tactical combat, challenging moral dilemmas, and stunning painterly visuals.

Wartorn casts players into a fractured fantasy world, following the journey of two elven sisters striving for family reunification. Their quest will be fraught with peril, demanding strategic prowess in intense battles and forcing players to confront difficult moral choices.

Dynamic Destruction and Strategic Depth

The game's defining feature is its physics-driven environmental destruction. Unscripted and unpredictable, this element ensures each playthrough offers a fresh, unique experience. Combat is equally dynamic, featuring a flexible magic system allowing players to creatively combine elemental forces (fire, water, lightning) for diverse tactical effects. Imagine shocking enemies submerged in water or igniting tar-covered foes – the possibilities are endless.

Beyond the battlefield, players face equally challenging decisions. Resource management, such as choosing which character to nourish or who to rescue from imminent danger, will significantly impact the narrative and subsequent gameplay. This story-driven roguelite design emphasizes player agency and replayability.

A Painterly Aesthetic and Accessible Gameplay

Wartorn's painterly art style enhances the dramatic narrative, while its accessible gameplay mechanics ensure a smooth experience for all players. A customizable slow-motion feature allows for precise command input even amidst the chaos of battle. Furthermore, the game's progression system incorporates carry-over upgrades between runs, making each attempt a learning experience that builds towards eventual victory. Co-founder and Creative Director Paul Hellquist states, "We’ve poured our hearts into creating a game that not only entertains but also makes players think deeply about sacrifice, survival, and the bonds that unite us."

Wartorn is poised to launch in early access on Steam and the Epic Games Store in Spring 2025.
