Hideo Kojima's ambitious project, Physint, described as a spiritual successor to his iconic Metal Gear series, is still a significant wait away, with the creator estimating another "five or six years" until its release. This timeline was shared by Kojima during an interview with Le Film Francais, where he also discussed his ongoing commitment to his independent studio post his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.
Kojima has been inundated with offers since going independent, but he remains focused on his current projects. Alongside Physint, he's working on Death Stranding 2. His passion for cinema remains strong, yet he's putting his directorial ambitions on hold until after completing Physint. "I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it," Kojima remarked, expressing a desire to pursue filmmaking while he's still "young."
The announcement of Physint came from PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst back in January 2024. Initially, there was some confusion about the project being a movie, but Kojima clarified on X/Twitter that it's a new form of "Digital Entertainment" that blends elements of movies with gaming.
Kojima Productions is juggling multiple projects, including OD, a new IP in partnership with Xbox Game Studios, featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, there's an A24 film adaptation of the original Death Stranding in the works.
Fans won't have to wait as long for Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, set to launch on June 26. Star Norman Reedus, who will reprise his role in the upcoming film adaptation, humorously confirmed to IGN that he would play himself in the movie.
In a recent twist, Kojima revealed he has left his team a USB stick containing game ideas to be explored after his passing, showcasing his forward-thinking approach to his legacy. Additionally, he shared insights into various discarded concepts, including a 'Forgetting Game' where the protagonist loses abilities and memories if players take long breaks.
