Marcin Iwiński, co-founder of The Witcher 3 developer CD Projekt Red, has stated that the studio now understands the importance of staying within its "niche": creating AAA, open-world, narrative-driven RPGs.
During an episode of the studio's AnsweRed podcast, Iwiński joined joint-CEO Adam Badowski for a discussion about the company's journey. They reflected on past projects and acknowledged that, despite the allure of exploring new game styles and genres, their core strength lies in open-world RPGs.
"A key lesson we've learned over time, and I believe Adam fully agrees, is the critical need for razor-sharp focus," Iwiński explained. "We can't pursue every exciting opportunity we encounter, no matter how tempting. We've experimented, and it hasn't worked. We must concentrate on what we excel at and commit 100% to it.
"That's precisely why we transitioned from managing a single project to handling multiple projects," Badowski added. "However, everything aligns with our defined strategy. We will develop AAA, open-world, narrative-driven RPGs—this is our specialty, our niche. So the focus remains firmly there."
"It sounds deceptively simple," Iwiński agreed. "As a company grows, it's challenging because you constantly see others' successes and think, 'That looks amazing, we'd love to do something like that.' But we have to pause, take a deep breath, and return to our core mission. Spreading ourselves too thin would only compromise our ability to deliver."
"New ideas are fantastic, and gameplay in games continues to evolve and improve," Badowski noted. "But you have to integrate those concepts thoughtfully into your own vision. That process takes time. Initial enthusiasm is valuable, but it isn't a sustainable long-term strategy."
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has now reached an astounding 60 million copies sold, including both the base game and the Game of the Year edition. This total does not even include the separately sold expansions.

Last week, it was confirmed that The Witcher 3 will receive another patch in late 2025. This update will introduce cross-platform mod support, making mods accessible on consoles for the first time ever. CD Projekt announced this patch as part of the 10th-anniversary celebrations for The Witcher 3. It will enable cross-platform mod support for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S later this year. "For the first time, creating, sharing, and enjoying mods for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be simpler and more accessible than ever before," CD Projekt stated.
As for The Witcher 4? Full production is now underway, though the earliest release window is 2027. CD Projekt is also actively developing Cyberpunk 2, Project Sirius (a multiplayer Witcher title), Project Hadar (an original IP), and a full remake of The Witcher 1.
